2017 Vegetable CSA

What is a CSA?

Known as a CSA, Community Supported Agriculture allows members to support a local farm by paying a fixed, discounted price for a season’s worth of vegetables and fruit at the beginning of the growing season and then pick up their ‘shares’ every week from early-mid June to mid-late October. Members receive a 10%-15% markdown from our retail prices, and in return, we receive payment in the winter and spring when we incur many of our production costs.

Becoming a CSA member means sharing the risks and the bounties of the season with the farm, so much of the weekly selections will be weather and crop dependent.  We will provide regular updates as to how the crops are doing and what you can expect in your share each week.

Our Growing Practices

We believe that building the strength and vigor of our soil will grow healthier vegetables for you and your family.  We use organic cultivation techniques, compost from our animals, and often grow hardier heirloom varieties of vegetables.  We do not use chemical fertilizers, nor do we spray our crops.  If we are faced with a large pest problem and are forced to spray, we will label the item affected with information about the chemical used so that you are fully aware of what you are buying.

What Vegetables Will Be Included?

In addition to standard varieties, we grow many heirloom and hard-to-find varieties of vegetables. Your share will include varieties like Brandywine and Striped German tomatoes, Jimmy Nardello hot peppers,  Adirondack Red potatoes, and golden beets.

Share Sizes, Style, and Pricing

Small Share: 4  items per week
$225-$275

Our small share is perfect for individuals, families who have found a medium share to be a bit too much food, or if you have your own garden and would like a CSA as a supplement to that.

Medium Share: 6 items per week
$300-$400

Our medium share is our most popular size.  This share is great for most couples, small families, or those interested in trying a CSA for the first time.

Large Share: 9 items per week
$550-$650

Our large share is suitable for larger families or couples who cook often and consume a large quantity of vegetables each week.
Pricing
We offer sliding scale pricing on all of our CSA shares.  This means we provide a range of prices, allowing you to pay as much as you are able.  We love this system because a CSA is just that: Community Supported Agriculture, and a sliding scale means that folks who are able to contribute more can, which helps out folks who can’t.  Our goal is to create a space where the entirety of our community can have access to fresh vegetables and this is a first step towards that.  In coming years, we’ll continue to cultivate ways to offer shares that are even more subsidized.

If you're unsure of how much to pay, the middle of each range is what we need as a farm to make ends meet.  That means, $250 for a small share, $350 for a medium share, and $600 for a large share.
SIzes:
When you order, you choose what size share you would like depending on how many people it will be for and the amount of vegetables your household typically eats in a week.  Each week, we will provide you with a specific number of items, which are based on the quantity you typically buy in a store or from a farm: a head of broccoli, a pound of tomatoes, or a bunch of kale.
Style:
We offer two styles of share:
  • Boxed shares are available on Sundays at the farm, at Umami, and at Calef's Country Store.  We pack these shares for you from a balanced variety of seasonal selections.
  • Market Shares are available for on farm pickups only on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11:30am-6:30pm.  A market style share allows members to choose what they would like in their shares from a large selection of available produce.  Each week, you can pick up your share at any point during our open hours, and there is no need to tell us in advance when you plan to come.
Payment Schedule
Payments can be made either at the farm store or by sending a check to us at: Brasen Hill Farm, 71 Warren Rd, Barrington, NH, 03825.  We cannot accept credit card payments for the CSA.
